Paul CAPDEVILLE, a French Pictorialist
" I said that it was an Art, a new Art! " declared Armand Sylvestre about photography in 1892 when Pictorialism was born. Hard worker, meticulous photographer, Paul CAPDEVILLE embodies this trend for half a century. Although he is not well known, he is nevertheless an active member of French photography clubs (member of the Société Française de Photographie from 1922, secretary and then president of the Photo-club of Levallois-Perret from 1920 to 1950). CAPDEVILLE exhibited from France to Japan his intimist visions of the countryside, the city, nature or the workers of the sea. From the Sables d'Olonne to Ostend in Belgium, from the Swiss mountains to Paris, we travel with him through nearly 100 pictures in the world of Pictorialism.
Provenance of the collection: former collection of Jean Achille Lescurier d'Espérières.
We thank Mr. Dominique Mathieu and Mrs. Béatrice BOUYSSOU of the Photo-Club of Levallois Perret for their collaboration.
